“Happiness consists in getting enough sleep. Just that, nothing more.” ― Robert A. Heinlein
“O sleep, O gentle sleep, Nature's soft nurse, how have I frighted thee, That thou no more wilt weigh my eyelids down And steep my senses in forgetfulness?” ― Shakespeare in Henry IV Part 2
You’ve probably heard of melatonin for sleep. In the world of popular natural remedies, before the CBD Craze, was the melatonin moment. As word of melatonin’s ability to support a healthy sleep-wake cycle spread, many people successfully turned to melatonin to get a good night’s rest. CV Sciences has now combined the power of CBD with the power of melatonin into one special gummy to help you have your best night’s rest.
What is melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by all humans and most vertebrates. The brain’s pineal gland (a tiny organ in the brain’s center that Descartes famously called the “seat of the soul”) secretes it at night. According to modern research, the main function of the pineal gland is to take in information about the light-dark cycle from the environment, and use it to regulate our sleep-wake cycle.
Surprisingly, melatonin was first found in the skin of amphibians because it helped their skins to change color. By the mid 1970’s, Dr. Harry Lynch and his collaborators found that melatonin existed on a circadian rhythm. Soon, researchers began to realize that this was because it helped to control our own circadian rhythm. In 1995, the first patent for using melatonin as a low-dose sleep aid was granted. As a dietary supplement, melatonin is used to help people adjust to jet lag.
Recently, melatonin has been identified as a potent antioxidant that scavenges free radicals. Via your melatonin receptors, it increases the amount of other antioxidant enzymes in the mitochondria (the cell’s powerhouse). It’s been called an ‘apex antioxidant’ – which makes you think of a melatonin lion roaming the cell gobbling up free radical crocodiles. That’s why it’s used to help with oxidative stress, as well as a healthy inflammation response. We can naturally supplement melatonin by the foods we eat, like Bananas, pineapples, and oranges.
Human melatonin production starts as soon as we are born, and by the age of three months, we have a stable cycle of melatonin levels. As we grow into teenagers, our timing of melatonin’s release becomes later and later in the day, leading to the later sleeping and waking times. As we age, our melatonin production decreases. Supplementing it is helpful for the sleep of those over 55. From the studies, one of the most remarked elements of melatonin is its safety profile.
How melatonin helps with sleep
Melatonin is the most popular sleep-aid sold in the United States. Reviews of the available clinical evidence confirm its benefits.
Melatonin works as a controller of circadian rhythms. When the eye is receiving light from the sun (or the blue light from our phone screens), the pineal gland suppressed our production of melatonin to keep us awake. As the sun goes down and the eye receives less light, the pineal gland increases the production of melatonin (which is made from serotonin). As the darkness increases, the amount of melatonin in your brain increases, preparing you for sleep. That’s why melatonin is called ‘the hormone of darkness.’
The first positive effect of melatonin on sleep is direct: it acts as a soporific – or sleep promoter. The presence of melatonin accelerates the initiation of sleep and increases the efficiency of sleep. In addition, the presence of CBD in our PlusCBD Sleep gummy lessens anxiety and that might be one of the reasons that these two work together.
Melatonin works in a top-level way by training your body’s natural sleep-wake rhythm. That’s why helping with jet-lag was one of its first uses. For blind people, they experience sleep cycle trouble because of the lack of light input to their pineal gland. Melatonin at a certain time of day can help them to keep their rhythms aligned to the sleep cycle that they desire. The regular use of melatonin can help train your body’s sleep-wake cycle to one that works for you - and help you to wake up feeling refreshed every morning.
PlusCBD Sleep Gummies
We know that many people struggle to find restful sleep and a healthy circadian rhythm. That’s why we created our PlusCBD Sleep gummies. They help support restful sleep and promote relaxation.
Our Formula
Our formula doesn’t just include 10 mg of CBD and 3 milligrams of melatonin. It also contains two other natural ingredients that support sleep.
The PlusCBD Sleep gummies contain:
- 50 mg of Magnolia Bark extract – Magnolia bark has been used for thousands of years in China and Japan to help counteract the stagnation of qi, the vital life force. Traditional preparations are utilized for the relief of anxiety and for the induction of sleep. Magnolia bark is particularly rich in two neolignans called magnolol and honokiol. These two molecules have been well-studied for their safety and efficacy. Their traditional use for sleep and anxiety have been confirmed in animal studies – though more clinical research needs to be done. We include magnolia bark in our Sleep formula because of its long history of use and its strong safety profile.
- 50 mg of Lemon Balm extract – An herb in the mint family, lemon balm isn’t just for cooking. The famous Swiss physician Paracelsus called it the “elixir of life” and lemon balm is the secret ingredient in the old 14th century tonic of Carmelite nuns known as Carmelite water. Since those time, lemon balm has been used in traditional medicine for sleep and to help with anxiety.
- And organic cane sugar and organic tapioca syrup to make them taste sweet
