The Difference Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil

With CBD growing in popularity, it’s becoming a topic of conversation in many different circles. There seems to be some confusion around the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil, specifically. Though hemp oil and CBD oil (cannabidiol oil) are both derived from the same plant – agricultural hemp – they serve very different purposes. We thought this would be a good opportunity for us to clear the air on what each product is and what they are commonly used for.

Knowing the difference between the two can be as simple as understanding where each comes from. We’ll begin by explaining the processes for collecting hemp oil and CBD oil, and then cover the uses and benefits of each.

Hemp Oil Extraction Process

Hemp oil, also referred to as hemp seed oil, is extracted directly from hemp seeds. The seeds themselves contain no psychoactive substances, though trace amounts can be found on their surface due to being in contact with the plant. Before moving on to the oil extraction process, the seeds are cleaned to remove any unwanted or residual plant matter.

Once the seeds are cleaned, they are ready to be used to make hemp oil. About 30-35% of the weight of a single hemp seed is oil, which makes the extraction process quite simple. The most popular way the oil is acquired is through a process known as cold pressing. By simply pressing and grinding the seeds, the oil is separated and collected. This creates unrefined hemp oil that is naturally nutritional and has nutty flavor. From there, the oil can be used in products like vegetable oil or refined further for other purposes.

CBD Oil Extraction Process

The process for extracting CBD is a bit more complex. CBD must be extracted from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of hemp plants. These parts of the plant contain many different compounds and require additional processing to isolate the CBD. There are many different extraction techniques and various pieces of equipment that are used to help separate CBD and measure its quality and potency.

At PlusCBD Oil™, we use a chemical-free, environmentally-friendly CO2 extraction process. Our CBD then undergoes third-party analysis and testing to ensure it is pure and of the highest quality. Once it has been tested to meet our quality standards, we add it to our various CBD products such as oils, sprays, tinctures, soft gels, capsules, balms, and oral applicators.

Benefits of Hemp Oil

The benefits and uses of hemp oil are myriad. As previously mentioned, hemp oil is full of nutrients and works well as a cooking oil, adding a mild nutty flavor to the meal. It is also commonly used in lotions, moisturizers, and soaps due to its ability to keep skin hydrated. In place of petroleum, hemp oil can serve as a base in plastics and paints and can even work as a biodiesel fuel source for vehicles. Its oily, moisturizing, and naturally nutritional properties make hemp oil very versatile.

Benefits of CBD Oil

While Plus CBD Oil cannot make specific claims on the benefits of taking CBD oil, many people have described their experience with taking our products as feeling contented, clear-headed, and composed. Many tests have been done that suggest CBD oil may be able to serve a variety of applications. While CBD is one of the most researched cannabinoids, there are still very few clinical trials. However, we do know that CBD can interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS has the ability to “talk” to all the other systems in the body, working to achieve homeostasis. With CBD, this balancing act is optimized. We encourage those who are interested in CBD to do their own research on the subject and then try one of our products to understand how it can benefit them.

Is CBD Oil the Same as Hemp Oil?

Whereas hemp oil has many uses in commercial and industrial products, CBD oil helps facilitate homeostasis between mind and body through receptors in the endocannabinoid system. By now we hope the answer here is obvious: hemp oil and CBD oil are not the same, with each serving two drastically different needs. Knowing the source and purposes of each should help clear up some of the confusing lingo tossed around.
